october sucked, let's listen to music and bake together
with rose + cardamom buns, sweet potato za'atar fries, and muhammara
Hey dear friends and readers,
October was a really hard month for me for a lot of reasons! Not interested in getting into it really but that’s why the newsletter is a teeny bit late. It’s also why there will simply be less content in this one than usual. But maybe some of you secretly hate my rambling intros anyway, so this one’s for you! Straight to the point.
All I will offer you in lieu of many musings on plant-based diets in SWANA communities is a short list of songs I’ve been listening to a lot lately or songs that I like to listen to when I’m in a bad mood. They are (not shockingly for anyone who follows me on twitter) mostly folk songs, cheers.
Year on Year, Day by Day - Passenger
Quicksand - SZA
Way Back When - Kodaline
Tenenbaum - The Paper Kites
Cats and Dogs - The Head and the Heart
Low Down Rolling Stone - Gary Clark Jr.
Kyoto - Phoebe Bridgers
When Our Legs Grew Tall - The Paper Kites
Rhythm & Blues - The Head and the Heart
Big Wheel - Samia (Arab-American queen + my name twin <3)
This month I give you THREE recipes! Mostly just because the savory one is small and also because the third recipe is not my own and I have no additions or adaptations since it is brilliant as is. I present to you:
Much like the olive oil cake, these are truly my crowning glory. Like really, please make them. They are so good I cannot stress this enough. Like something you’d find on the Great British Bake-Off. Possibly better. Just make them I promise you won’t be disappointed.
This recipe is my love letter to my local Assyrian food truck which started selling sweet potato za’atar fries this summer and which I am obsessed with. Sweet potatoes are really one of my favorite foods and this is my favorite midday snack!
Ok so this one is not my recipe nor do I have any additions to make to it but it is really so perfect as it is and a great mezze addition. Plus it’s pomegranate season now so you can top it with pomegranate seeds if you want! A little labor intensive but imo worth it if you have the time. Also, I halved the recipe and it still made a ton.
That’s all for now folks! Hopefully this month I’ll be able to offer some more musings and perhaps some more entree-type recipes <3
lots of love + sa7tein!!
